On 9/11 Brett Winterble was in Manhattan, Brett and his wife only separated from the World Trade Center by a matter of blocks. He remembers the sound of the jet fighters screaming down the island of Manhattan as they headed toward ground zero the site of the sneak attack that incinerated thousands. He remembers the sirens, the frantic calls for help, the collapse, the dust, the smoke, and the smells of the world’s biggest funeral pyre. He remembers the anger and the sense of powerlessness. His grandfather had built the twin the towers in the early 70’s getting up every morning to lay the foundations and the walls as a cement mason. His grandfather told Brett back in 1993 when Ramsey Yusuf and the then unknown Al Qaeda tried to knock them down, that they’d never topple, they’d only comedown, one floor on top of the other. He remember his words on that early September morning as the azure blue skies were engulfed by the dust of the dead. He remembered his words when he got the news that his cousin perished on that fateful day.
At that moment Brett committed himself to learning everything he could about the animals who did this—their ideology, their creed, their ways: Al Qaeda, Bin Laden, Afghanistan, Iran, the Muslim Brotherhood and the threats that faced America. From there it grew. For weeks, Brett was nervous and couldn’t sleep, fearing another attack. Every time he went into a tunnel or crossed a bridge into the city and on the way back out, he said a little prayer to myself—to get home safely to his family. And to continue to study, to learn the ways of our enemies-- information meant power, information meant victory. In late 2004, he pulled together his thoughts on threats that face America, Military, Terrorism, Economic, and Political. He stopped counting at 6 pages. His self-study was enlightening but too scattered; he needed to focus to start at the beginning. He decided it was time to get fully engaged in the fight—to open a new front against America’s enemies, in his mind. Over the next few years, He continued to work in the media in New York and during his commute, would complete the requirements necessary to be awarded an MA in Homeland Security Studies and Intelligence Methods. He graduated with high honors from American Military University and was awarded his degree. It was now time to put his training into full effect, thus the Covert Radio Show and CovertRadioShow.com came into being.
Covert Radio started as a series of pod casts, mostly interviews and riffs rarely exceeding 15 minutes at a crack. But over the course of the next year it took shape—becoming at first a daily 1-hour show and then a daily 2-hour show. And the audience exploded. It was continually amazed by the notes he gets from every corner of the world, from civilians and military personnel touching base with him. Covert Radio covers threats—the things that work to destroy our country and our way of life. If it can result in ruination either by truck bomb or by cyber strike, political corruption or by Ponzi scheme we talk about it. Whether studying transnational, stateless street gangs looking to traffic narcotics, weapons and human cargo into our nation, where they seek to practice their murderous trade, or examining counter insurgency, trying to figure out how to defeat the mindset that fuels the millions of junior bin Laden’s around the world—Brett Winterble is a relentless consumer of intelligence, both classified and open source. He has written monographs and studied everything from the North Korean Meth and Counterfeiting trade to the roots of the modern ecoterror movement. It has been tried throughout history and its victims carry names like Jimmy Carter and Neville Chamberlain—sadly they never pay for their naiveté, instead is left to our best and brightest and bravest to shed blood to make up for their cowardice and laziness.
